The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General O. Oluyede, has condemned the recent outburst by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, during a confrontation with a naval officer in Abuja, describing the officer’s conduct as a model of discipline and professionalism.
In a statement released on Tuesday, General Oluyede commended Lieutenant A.M. Yerima for displaying “exemplary composure and emotional intelligence” despite being verbally provoked by the Minister.
“The officer’s response showcased exemplary composure and emotional intelligence, vital to military leadership training.
“His ability to remain calm, firm, and respectful under provocation reflects the core values of discipline and professionalism instilled at the Nigerian Defence Academy,” the CDS stated.
General Oluyede expressed disappointment over the Minister’s language during the incident, describing it as “unfortunate and inappropriate” for a public official to address a serving officer of the Armed Forces in such a manner.
“It is regrettable that a federal minister would use such language toward a uniformed officer. Public officials are expected to model civility and restraint, especially when engaging those who serve and sacrifice for our nation,”
he added.
The confrontation reportedly occurred on Monday in Abuja following a dispute involving the Minister’s convoy and the naval officer on official duty. Eye witnesses said, the exchange quickly drew attention due to its intensity.
While details remain sketchy, the Defence Headquarters has urged all parties to exercise restraint, reiterating the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for civil authority.
As of press time, the FCT Minister’s office had yet to issue an official statement. However, Mr. Wike’s Senior Special Adviser on Publicity and Communication, Lere Olayinka, in a television appearance, defended his principal’s position, asserting that “not all orders are meant to be obeyed unless lawful.”
The aide also described the officer as “unruly,” adding that the Minister had reached out to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff for clarification.
Meanwhile, several civic groups—including military veterans, student unions, and civil society organizations—have condemned the Minister’s conduct, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and uphold respect between civil authorities and the Armed Forces.
In a separate but related development, reports have surfaced of a land dispute involving Minister Wike and Vice Admiral A.Z. Gambo (rtd) in the Gaduwa area of Abuja.
According to verified information, the retired naval chief lawfully acquired the plot in 2020, with full documentation. Development began in September 2025, but within days, FCT Development Control officials halted the project, citing an alleged revocation by the Minister without formal notice.
Efforts by Admiral Gambo to clarify the issue reportedly proved futile. On Saturday, Minister Wike personally visited the site, threatening demolition. By 11 a.m. on Tuesday, bulldozers from Development Control arrived, but workers resisted.
The Minister later called the FCT Commissioner of Police and subsequently reached out to the CDS, who assured him the situation was under control.
The Defence Headquarters has reiterated that, the Armed Forces remain committed to professionalism and respect for lawful civil authority, even in the face of provocation.
“Our officers are trained to maintain composure in all circumstances, and we urge public officials to reciprocate this with mutual respect”, the statement added.
