President Tinubu Marks 26 Years of Nigeria’s Democracy, Calls for Collective Progress

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked Nigeria’s 26th year of unbroken democracy with a passionate address to the National Assembly, reflecting on the nation’s progress and challenges. He emphasized the significance of June 12, commemorating the sacrifices of heroes who fought for democratic governance.

Tinubu highlighted key economic reforms, including a 3.4% GDP growth in 2024, with Q4 reaching 4.6%, the highest in over a decade. He also noted improvements in foreign reserves and Naira exchange rate stability. The president touted initiatives like the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, which has benefited over 100,000 Nigerians, and plans to empower 400,000 young Nigerians with consumer credit.

The president urged cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to drive economic growth and social development. He emphasized the importance of tolerance, dialogue, and civil liberties in a democratic society. Tinubu also acknowledged the role of the military in safeguarding freedoms and thanked the Armed Forces for their bravery.

In recognition of their contributions, Tinubu conferred national honors on notable individuals, including Prof. Wole Soyinka and legendary journalist Sam Amuka Pemu. He also posthumously honored heroes of the June 12 struggle, such as Kudirat Abiola and Ken Saro Wiwa, and announced a full pardon for these national heroes.

Tinubu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to democracy, transparency, and accountable governance, calling on Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the ideals of June 12. He wished the nation a Happy Democracy Day, invoking God’s blessings on Nigeria and its people.
