It was celebration galore as Nigeria’s Super Falcons comeback won the 10th WAFCON title in Rabat, Morocco yesterday.

Nigeria trailed 2-0 at half-time in the early encounter but staged a stunning comeback. Morocco struck first in the opening half, as captain Ghizlane Chebbak fired in a long-range strike and Sanaâ Mssoudy added a second.

In the second half, Nigeria earned a penalty via VAR handball by Nouhaila Benzina; Esther Okoronkwo calmly converted at 65 minutes and then set up Folashade Ijamilusi for a 71 minutes tap-in equaliser.

A potential late Morocco penalty at 78 minutes was overturned by VAR, and in the 88th minutes substitute Jennifer Echegini met a set-piece delivery from Okoronkwo to head home the winner.

The suprising 3-2 turnaround, capped by Echegini’s goal, sealed Nigeria’s triumph.

The US-born forward, Esther Okoronkwo was the catalyst of the comeback, scoring one goal (penalty) and finished the tournament with 2 goals and 4 assists, while Folashade Ijamilusi netted Nigeria’s equaliser at 71 minutes and caused problems on the left flank, capitalizing on Okoronkwo’s chance to keep Nigeria in the match.

Later, Nigeria’s Jennifer Echegini and a super-sub, whose only goal of the tournament proved decisive, headed in the 88th-minute winner after Okoronkwo’s delivery, just as Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and midfield leader, worked tirelessly to help drive Nigeria’s comeback.

Nigeria’s 3-2 win at the 10th WAFCON title confirms the Super Falcons as the continent’s most successful side and cements their status at the top of African women’s football.

With this momentum of earning the $1 million winner’s prize, Nigeria are favorites for upcoming tournaments and are expected to maintain their leading FIFA ranking in Africa.
