NPF Warns Against Lobbying for Promotions, Restates commitment to merit-based elevation of officers

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised alarm over the increasing trend of lobbying by some officers seeking special promotions through unofficial channels.
The Force has also strongly refuted false narratives being circulated by online platforms, claiming that Ngeria Police has initiated a blanket promotion exercise.
In a statement issued from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF clarified that the recent accelerated promotions awarded to some officers were strictly based on merit, exceptional service, professional excellence, and bravery.
The promotions, the statement emphasized, were neither arbitrary nor political, but part of a structured reward system guided by transparent and standardized procedures.
“The recent promotion exercise should not be misinterpreted as a general or indiscriminate promotion scheme,” the statement read.
“Officers, who benefited were those who met clearly defined performance metrics, as laid down by police leadership and the Police Service Commission.”
The Force expressed concern over what it described as “misleading reports” by an unnamed online platform, which it accused of attempting to undermine the integrity of the promotion process with baseless and inaccurate claims.
While restating its zero tolerance for undue influence in personnel matters, the Police Force warned officers against lobbying for promotions.
According to the statement, “Such conduct is unethical, undermines the principles of professionalism and meritocracy, and will attract disciplinary action”.
The Force also called on the general public and stakeholders to disregard online publications that seek to misinform and erode public confidence in the police institution.
“The NPF remains unwavering in its commitment to a promotion system rooted in integrity, verifiable merit, and honourable service to the Nigerian people,” the release concluded.
The statement comes amid a wave of internal restructuring and professional reforms aimed at repositioning the Force for greater effectiveness in securing lives and property.
