Hilda Baci Stamps Her Name in History, As Guinness Confirms 8.78 kg Tonnes of Jollof Rice Record

Nigeria’s culinary superstar, Chef Hilda Baci, has once again etched her name in the Guinness World Records after cooking up a staggering 8,780 kilograms (19,356 lbs) of Nigerian-style jollof rice in one sitting.

The official confirmation came from Guinness World Records on its X-page on Friday, September 12, announcing Baci as the new record holder for the largest serving of jollof rice cooked at once.

The feat was achieved during the Gino World Jollof Festival in Victoria Island, Lagos, where Baci and her team cooked for nine straight hours, a process she described as fueled by “fire, passion, and teamwork.”

The monumental dish, prepared with authentic Nigerian ingredients and traditional methods, far surpassed the Guinness benchmark of 4,700 kg. Despite high drama when the massive custom-made pot collapsed under a crane during weighing, the record was officially ratified.

This is not Baci’s first brush with global fame. In May 2023, she set the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual at 93 hours and 11 minutes, a title later claimed by Irish chef Alan Fisher.

Yet, her latest triumph reaffirms her status as a cultural ambassador for Nigerian cuisine and West African food heritage.

Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the cookathon, cheering as the final weight was revealed.

For many, it was more than a culinary record; it was a celebration of unity, culture, and the global rise of Nigerian gastronomy.

Guinness World Records hailed the achievement, applauding its “scale and cultural significance.”

Earlier, Akwa Ibom Governor, Umo Eno had celebrated the celebrity chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, for her audacious attempt at yet another Guinness World Record, cooking the largest pot of Nigerian jollof rice.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno described Hilda Baci’s latest culinary feat as a bold demonstration of the Akwa Ibom spirit of courage, innovation, and resilience.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, I celebrate you on your bold Guinness World Record attempt, this time by cooking the ‘largest pot of Nigerian jollof rice,’ Governor Eno said.

He further noted that Hilda’s relentless pursuit of global recognition reflects the State’s values of excellence and determination.

“Your success exemplifies the Akwa Ibom Spirit of resilience, creativity, industry, unbridled passion for excellence and indomitable ‘can-do’ mindset.

“May your continuous push to conquer every imaginable height in your chosen vocation, inspire others especially our youths, to dream more, dare more and drive more for success,” he added.
