Emefiele Returns N4 Trillion, Forfeits Six Banks, $275M Found In Account of Buhari’s Aide’s Six Years-Old Son
Ex-CBN Deputy Governor Tunde Lemo reportedly refunds $500m as Obazee probe uncovers massive looting under Buhari administration
In what investigators have described as one of the largest financial recoveries in Nigeria’s history, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has reportedly refunded a staggering N4 trillion to the Federal Government, funds allegedly siphoned during his tenure at the apex bank.
A source close to the Special Investigator, Jim Osayande Obazee, disclosed that in addition to the refund, Emefiele has also relinquished ownership of six commercial banks allegedly linked to him.
The source further revealed that a former CBN Deputy Governor, Tunde Lemo, has also reportedly refunded $500 million said to have been misappropriated from public funds.
Perhaps the most startling revelation from the ongoing probe is the discovery of $275 million lodged in the account of a six-year-old son of Sabiu “Tunde” Yusuf, the Personal Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Investigators also allegedly traced N1.5 trillion to the personal account of Yusuf himself, described as a powerful figure within the former administration.
According to the source, “The Special Investigator, Jim Osayande Obazee, and his team discovered the funds in a new generation bank. The committee also traced another N1.5 trillion to Yusuf’s personal account.”
Only recently, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, lamented that the Tinubu administration inherited a bankrupt economy from its predecessor, citing massive looting under Buhari’s government as a major cause.
It will be recalled that President Tinubu appointed Mr. Obazee as Special Investigator to probe the operations of the CBN and related entities during Emefiele’s tenure.
So far, the investigation is said to have led to the recovery of over N12 trillion allegedly embezzled by key figures in the previous administration.
The source also claimed that the committee has rejected several multimillion-dollar bribe offers during the course of its work.
