Ikono Council Boss Lauds Elegant Angels FC, Pledges Standard Sports Facility for Youth Development

The Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Engr. Oto-Obong Essien, has reaffirmed her commitment to building a standard sports development facility in Ikono, inspired by Governor Umo Eno’s sustained investment in sports and grassroots development across Akwa Ibom State.

She made this known in Abuja on Sunday after witnessing a goalless draw between Akwa Ibom State representatives, Elegant Angels, and Plateau Hurdles, in the opening match of the 10th Senate President’s Football Tournament.

Commending the team for their resilience and determination, the Council boss urged the players to sustain their fighting spirit and strive to make the state proud in subsequent matches.

“Governor Eno has charged us, as Council chairmen, to prioritize grassroots development and discover raw talents who can make the State and country proud in the future.

“As a passionate sports lover, I founded the academy to align with the Governor’s vision and provide a platform for our young girls to become future Super Falcons and Falconets.”

She also commended the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio for organizing the competition, describing it as a noble initiative that promotes unity and grassroots sports growth nationwide.

Engr. Essien further disclosed plans to establish a modern sports facility in Ikono, to reduce the risks and challenges young athletes face in traveling long distances to access proper training centers.

Elegant Angels, one of the two teams representing Akwa Ibom at the tournament, was formed by the Chairman as part of her youth empowerment and sports development drive.

The team, which arrived Abuja on Saturday afternoon, put up an exciting performance in their first match encounter against Plateau Hurdles in the opening match.

They were later taken on tour of major landmarks including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Nicon Luxury Hotel, and the Women Development Centre.

The players’ excitement and enthusiasm, according to observers, reflected the growing confidence and exposure that grassroots sports initiatives are bringing to young talents across Akwa Ibom State.
