Gov Umo and the Future of Security in Akwa Ibom, Biometric Registration of Keke and Mini Buses as a Commitment to Public Safety*

By Destiny Young | November 18, 2025

The Akwa Ibom State Government has introduced a comprehensive biometric registration system for tricycles, known locally as Keke, and mini buses. The initiative, which aligns with H.E Pastor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda, is designed to strengthen road safety, security, and the identification* of commercial transport operators across the state.

Under the new system, every Keke and mini bus operator will undergo biometric capturing and receive a unique alpha numeric registration number. Each registered vehicle will also carry an official security sticker embedded with a QR code. This feature allows for quick identification by security agencies and transport authorities, and it is intended to deter criminal activity and reassure commuters of their safety.

Officials explained that the project represents a major step forward for the state’s transportation sector. The standardised registration process will help trace vehicles involved in crime, support traffic management, and promote accountability among commercial transport operators. The government believes that these improvements will boost public confidence in the land transport system, which serves millions of residents and visitors daily.

Governor Umo Eno has repeatedly emphasised security as one of the central pillars of his administration. The biometric initiative is viewed as a practical expression of that commitment because it offers a modern solution to long standing safety concerns on the state’s roads. By ensuring that every operator is identifiable and that every vehicle can be tracked, the administration hopes to create a safer and more organised environment for travel.

Transport stakeholders have welcomed the programme, noting that it will help reduce impersonation, curb illegal operations, and provide a reliable database for future planning. The system is also expected to support quick intervention during emergencies since registered vehicles and their operators can be easily located.

As the state continues to roll out impactful interventions in transport, agriculture, education, health and other sectors, many residents believe that Governor Umo Eno has demonstrated clear direction and purposeful leadership. With initiatives such as the biometric transport project, they argue that he deserves another opportunity in 2027 to continue building a legacy that will outlive his tenure.

Governor Eno’s supporters say that the transformation underway, particularly in critical areas of security and public welfare, reflects his long term vision for a safer, more prosperous Akwa Ibom State. They insist that consistent leadership will allow these reforms to mature fully and deliver lasting benefits to generations to come.
