Police Resume Tinted Glass Enforcement January 2 to Tackle Rising Crime

By Mohammed Faruk, Gombe

The Nigeria Police Force has announced to recommence the enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing heightened security concerns and need to better protect lives and property of the citizenry.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police said the decision followed a review of recent crime trends, which revealed the increasing use of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass in the commission of criminal activities.

According to the Force, such vehicles are frequently used by criminals to conceal their identities, while carrying out crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.

The Police clarified that, no court order prevents the enforcement of the tinted glass law. It explained that the earlier suspension of enforcement was a temporary measure to give motorists adequate time to regularise their documents and complete the necessary registration processes without undue pressure.

The statement noted that, the persistent abuse of tinted glass by criminal elements has made the resumption of full enforcement unavoidable, describing it as a preventive security step aimed at curbing crime and enhancing public safety.

Assuring Nigerians of professionalism, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, said the renewed enforcement would be conducted in line with existing laws and with full respect for the rights of citizens.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Police to the rule of law and to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a safer society.

Motorists requiring tinted glass permits are advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet legal requirements ahead of the January 2, 2026 enforcement date.
