Senate Orders Probe into Viral Rumours on Akpabio’s Health

The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate the source and spread of viral social media report alleging that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is in ill health.

The resolution followed concerns raised by lawmakers over what they described as unverified and potentially destabilising information circulating widely online. Senators noted that the rumours, which gained traction across multiple social media platforms, could undermine public confidence in national leadership and threaten political stability if left unchecked.

In mandating the NSA to lead the investigation, the Senate stressed the need to identify those responsible for originating and amplifying the claims, as well as to determine whether the reports were part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.

Lawmakers reaffirmed their support for the Senate President, insisting that no official information had been presented to the chamber indicating any health-related incapacity. They urged the public to rely on credible and authoritative sources for information concerning public office holders.

The Senate also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national security and curbing the spread of mis information capable of inflaming public sentiment and disrupting governance processes in the country.
