Prof. Odewunmi Appointed Acting UNIUYO VC, As Council Begins Search for Substantive Vice-Chancellor

By Dennis Udoma

Professor Samuel Gbadebo Odewunmi has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UniUyo), Akwa Ibom State, following the approval of the university’s Governing Council.

The appointment was confirmed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr Muiz Banire, SAN, who said the decision became necessary to ensure administrative stability and continuity in the management of the institution.

Professor Odewunmi, a seasoned academic and administrator, is expected to steer the affairs of the university pending the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.

His emergence comes at a critical period in the life of UNIUYO, when the university is consolidating its academic programmes and strengthening its governance framework.

Dr. Banire disclosed that the Governing Council has already set in motion the statutory process for the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor for the university since the outgoing administrator failed in his leadership transition.

According to him, the process will be transparent, merit-driven and in strict compliance with relevant regulations guiding federal universities.

“The Council is committed to ensuring a seamless transition, while Professor Odewunmi will be overseeing the day-to-day administration of the university with arrangements to ensure the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor, who will provide long-term leadership,” Banire said.

He urged members of the university community to give their full cooperation and support to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, assuring that the Council remains focused on promoting academic excellence, industrial harmony and institutional stability in UniUyo.

Professor Odewunmi’s tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor is expected to last until the conclusion of the selection process and the eventual appointment of a substantive head for the university.
