President Bola Tinubu in a decisive move on Friday halted the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, ordering the immediate suspension of all impeachment proceedings in the State House of Assembly.
The presidential directive, issued amid rising tensions and behind-the-scenes power struggles, effectively freezes moves widely perceived as capable of throwing the state into further instability.
It was learned, the President instructed the lawmakers to immediately discontinue all impeachment-related actions and, instead, seek guidance from the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the way forward.
Sources close to the development said President Tinubu was particularly concerned that, the unfolding drama in Rivers could spiral into a full-blown political confrontation, with far-reaching implications for governance, security and party unity.
He reportedly warned that unchecked political aggression and factional manoeuvring would only deepen divisions and distract from the business of governance.
According to the source, “The President made it clear that this is not the time for political adventurism” saying, “He wants calm, dialogue and strict adherence to constitutional and party processes.”
Tinubu’s intervention is being interpreted in political circles as a firm signal that the Presidency will not tolerate actions capable of destabilising key states or undermining democratic institutions.
It also underscores his determination to rein in internal party disputes before they degenerate into crises with national consequences.
Rivers State has been locked in an intense political stand-off presently, marked by sharp divisions within the political elite and a struggle for control of the state’s political machinery.
The impeachment moves, which had gained momentum in the House of Assembly, heightened fears of a constitutional showdown and potential governance paralysis.
With the President’s order now in place, the political temperature in the state is expected to cool at least temporarily.
However, the directive has also altered the balance of power within the ongoing struggle.
In particular, former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, along with his loyalists, may find themselves politically exposed.
The impeachment drive, widely believed to have been championed by forces aligned with his camp, has been abruptly stalled, potentially leaving its backers grappling with an embarrassing setback.
Observers across the geo-political zone and beyond say the development not only strengthens the Presidency’s hand but also sends a clear message to power blocs within the ruling party, that internal disputes must be managed with caution and discipline.
As Rivers State awaits further direction from the APC leadership, stakeholders are watching closely to see whether the pause ordered by the President will pave the way for reconciliation or merely mark the opening of a new phase in the state’s protracted political battle.
Though, the lawmakers had earlier positioned to carry out the onslaught, the presidency’s intervention seems to have shifted the goal post, as more ripples are expected as events unfold.
