The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered a full investigation into the recent airstrike in Jilli axis of Borno State, while maintaining that the operation was aimed at terrorist groups.

In a statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the strike carried out by the Nigerian Air Force under Operation HADIN KAI was based on credible intelligence.

The government explained that the April 11 operation targeted known terrorist locations in Gubio Local Government Area, describing the area as a major hub for insurgent activities.

According to the statement, the Jilli axis, also known locally as “Kasu Daulaye,” has long been used by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters to plan attacks, collect funds, and move supplies.

The government noted that the area had been declared a high-risk zone, with restrictions on civilian movement due to ongoing security operations.

It, however, expressed regret over any loss of civilian lives and extended condolences to affected families.

“Every Nigerian life is important, and any civilian loss is deeply regretted,” the minister said.

The statement added that intelligence reports were supported by the arrest of a teenage courier linked to ISWAP, who confessed to moving funds and materials between Jilli and other locations.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, was also quoted as confirming that the area had been under terrorist control for years, with local markets shut down due to insecurity.

The Federal Government said the strike followed weeks of surveillance and was part of efforts to weaken terrorist networks and disrupt their operations.

It also assured that the ongoing investigation would review all aspects of the operation to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.

Meanwhile, the government said it is working with state authorities and emergency agencies to provide support to affected families.

It urged residents to follow security advisories, avoid restricted areas, and cooperate with security agencies.

The government also called on the media to report responsibly, warning that unverified information could mislead the public and affect national security efforts.

It reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism and restoring peace across the country.
