The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has banned proliferation of media groups in Akwa Ibom issuing stern warnings against activities of unauthorized, unrecognized, and unconstitutional splinter media groups operating as the Uyo, Eket, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Media Professionals within the state.
In a press release dated April 23, 2026, and signed by the State Secretary, Comrade Nsikak Esenowo, the union frowned at the rapid proliferation of such groups, describing them as unregulated and unprofessional formations that undermine the integrity of journalism practice.
The Council reiterated its long-standing resolution banning members from associating with or participating in any activities of these groups.
It stressed that, the union categorically condemns and dissociates itself from any form of splinter media organizations lacking proper accreditation and professional standing.
The statement recalled that, as far back as September 29, 2020, the State Executive Committee of NUJ had adopted a resolution aligning with the National Secretariat’s position, imposing automatic sanctions on members found to be affiliated with such groups.
It further noted that the National Executive Council, at its meeting in Kano in September 2025, reaffirmed the ban under the leadership of the National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, emphasizing zero tolerance for involvement in unauthorized media platforms at any level.
According to the NUJ, this latest communication serves as a final notice to erring members to immediately withdraw from such associations or face strict disciplinary action in line with the union’s constitutional provisions.
“Any member found identifying with, supporting, or participating in the activities of any splinter group, forum, or nomenclature whatsoever shall face decisive sanctions without recourse,” the statement warned.
The union also advised members of the public, government agencies, security institutions, corporate bodies, and religious organizations to desist from engaging, patronising or transacting with such unrecognized groups, citing their lack of accountability and professional credibility.
Instead, stakeholders were urged to channel all media-related engagements through the NUJ platform, which guarantees ethical journalism, professionalism, and credible reportage in line with globally accepted standards.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism, developmental reporting, and sustained collaboration in advancing the progress of Akwa Ibom State and the nation at large as well as sounding ‘Solidarity forever,” the statement concluded.
