ABUJA – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing a suit challenging his qualification as frivolous and lacking merit.

In its judgment, the court reaffirmed earlier judicial pronouncements which upheld Jonathan’s constitutional right to seek elective office, declaring that no legal impediment exists against his participation in the forthcoming presidential contest.

The presiding judge held that the plaintiff failed to provide convincing grounds to disqualify the former president from contesting the election, stressing that the matter had already been substantially addressed in previous court decisions.

The court further described the suit as an abuse of judicial process and consequently imposed fines on the plaintiff for filing what it termed an unnecessary and baseless action.

The ruling is expected to reignite political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active presidential politics.
