UYO – Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, on Tuesday experienced the comfort and modern features of the state’s newly acquired Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses during a demonstration ride organised by the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The test ride followed a media briefing at Government House, Uyo, where the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umana, alongside the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, outlined Governor Umo Eno’s vision of transforming public transportation system through the introduction of clean-energy buses.
Led by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, the journalists boarded one of the newly delivered buses and assessed its performance, applauding its spacious seating arrangement, smooth ride, air-conditioned cabin and other modern facilities designed to provide commuters with safe, comfortable and affordable transportation.
Addressing the media, Hon. Umana disclosed that the first batch of 20 CNG buses has arrived in the state out of the 50 procured by the government, describing the initiative as a major milestone in Governor Umo Eno’s drive to provide efficient and environmentally friendly mass transit services.
He explained that the project is a key component of the Governor’s ARISE Agenda, aimed at reducing transportation costs, improving mobility and enhancing the quality of life of residents through a modern public transport system.
The Commissioner added that the adoption of CNG-powered buses aligns with global efforts to promote cleaner energy, reduce carbon emissions and ensure sustainable urban transportation.
Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, said the state government is complementing the buses with critical infrastructure, including modern bus terminals, electronic ticketing systems and vehicle-tracking technology to guarantee efficient operations, transparency and improved service delivery.
The demonstration ride afforded journalists the opportunity to independently evaluate the quality and performance of the buses, reinforcing the government’s assurance that the new mass transit scheme will deliver safer, more reliable and commuter-friendly transportation across Akwa Ibom State.
