Late gospel singer, Osinachi’s husband sentenced to death by hanging

The FCT High Court in Abuja has delivered its verdict in the trial of Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi. Justice Nwosu-Iheme found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022, and sentenced him to death by hanging.

The court’s decision came after a thorough evaluation of the evidence presented during the trial, which began on June 3, 2022. Nwachukwu faced a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, and spousal battery. The prosecution presented a total of 17 witnesses, including Osinachi’s two children, who provided testimony as key witnesses.

In addition to the testimony, the prosecution submitted 25 documents as evidence to support their case. Nwachukwu, in his defense, testified alongside four other witnesses and presented four exhibits. Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, requested leniency, while the prosecution counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, advocated for the court to uphold the law.

The court handed down various sentences for the different counts. For the culpable homicide charge, Nwachukwu was sentenced to death by hanging. He received two-year prison sentences for several other counts and shorter prison terms and fines for additional charges.
