The campaign to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Akwa Ibom State gained fresh momentum on Tuesday as two federal lawmakers publicly endorsed Usọrọ Akwa Ibom, describing it as a worthy platform for protecting the state’s identity and promoting its tourism potential.
The endorsements came during separate visits by the Usọrọ Akwa Ibom delegation to the National Assembly, where they were received by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, and Hon. Ime Bassey Okon, member representing Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency.
The visit is ahead of the friendly match slated for Saturday, July 18 in Abuja,organised as a build up to the cultural festival in Uyo as part of celebration of Akwa Ibom anniversary come September 2026.
The lawmakers welcomed the initiative and applauded its commitment to keeping Akwa Ibom’s language, traditions, customs and cultural values alive at a time when many indigenous cultures are facing the threat of extinction.

They noted that beyond preserving the state’s anniversary, Usọrọ Akwa Ibom has the capacity to project Akwa Ibom as a leading cultural and tourism destination, while creating opportunities for young people through the creative and tourism sectors.
The delegation used the visits to brief the lawmakers on the vision and objectives of the initiative, emphasizing its focus on documenting, celebrating and promoting the unique identity of Akwa Ibom people for future generations.
In their response, Senator Aniekan Bassey and Hon. Ime Bassey Okon pledged their support for the initiative, expressing confidence that it would contribute meaningfully to the preservation of the state’s cultural legacy and further enhance its visibility within and beyond Nigeria.
Members of the delegation thanked the lawmakers for the warm reception and encouragement, describing the endorsements as a significant boost to the mission of Usọrọ Akwa Ibom.
