Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned Nigerians against filming, encouraging or participating in mob killings, stressing that such actions could attract criminal prosecution.
Disu condemned the growing incidents of jungle justice, saying no individual or group has the legal authority to arrest, try, convict or execute suspects outside the established judicial process. The Nigeria Police Force identifies Disu as the Inspector-General of Police.
The IGP said he has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to treat cases of mob action as homicide and conduct comprehensive forensic and intelligence investigations.
He also warned police officers against failing to intervene or deliberately ignoring mob violence, saying such conduct would attract disciplinary action.
Disu further urged community, religious and market leaders to use their influence to discourage jungle justice and promote respect for the rule of law.
