The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has raised concern over the exit of more than 200 lecturers from the institution in recent months.
Chairman of ASUU-KASU, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, told journalists at a press conference in Kaduna on Monday that the departing academics include professors and senior lecturers. He said the exodus was driven by poor working conditions, low remuneration and a decline in staff welfare at the university.
According to Abdullahi, most of the lecturers have moved to newer universities within and outside Kaduna State in search of better conditions. He noted that despite the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement coming into effect in January 2026, KASU management is yet to domesticate and implement the provisions, leaving staff at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts in other institutions.
The union leader said the continued non-implementation has deepened frustration among the few lecturers remaining, and has also affected teaching, research and supervision of students. He warned that if urgent steps are not taken, the quality of academic activities at the university will suffer further setbacks.
ASUU-KASU has now given the Kaduna State Government and KASU authorities a two-week ultimatum to implement the 2025 agreement. Abdullahi warned that failure to do so at the end of the deadline could force the union to embark on an indefinite strike action at the university.
