The Federal Government has unveiled a $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme aimed at providing immediate relief to vulnerable Nigerians while building pathways for long-term economic stability and self-reliance. The initiative is designed to cushion the impact of rising living costs and support households to recover and become economically independent.
The programme was officially launched in Abuja by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. She said the intervention reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty and ensuring that government support reaches those who need it most. According to her, the focus is on dignity, transparency, and measurable impact.
A key component of the scheme is the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project. The First Lady explained that the project will strengthen how vulnerable households are identified, registered, and supported across the country. It will combine direct assistance with linkages to skills, livelihoods, and financial inclusion opportunities.
The government said about 7.6 million vulnerable households nationwide will benefit from the programme. Eligible beneficiaries are to receive a one-off digital shock response cash transfer of ₦40,000. Officials described the payment as immediate support to help families meet urgent needs while longer-term empowerment measures are rolled out.
To ensure accountability, the Federal Government said selection will be done strictly from the National Social Register. Each beneficiary will also be verified using their National Identification Number, NIN. The government noted that the digital verification process is intended to promote transparency, reduce leakages, and prevent funds from going to ineligible persons.
Beyond the cash transfer, the Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme is structured to connect beneficiaries to economic opportunities. These include access to micro-credit, vocational training, and market linkages designed to help households move from dependence to productivity. The First Lady said the goal is not just relief, but resilience.
With the rollout expected to begin in phases across the 36 states and the FCT, the $1 billion programme is being positioned as one of the largest social protection interventions in recent years. Government officials said monitoring mechanisms will be put in place to track delivery and impact, as the administration seeks to meet its Renewed Hope Agenda targets for poverty reduction and inclusive growth.
Development partners and state governments have welcomed the programme, pledging to work with federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation at the grassroots. They noted that coordinating with community leaders, faith based groups, and civil society will be key to identifying the most vulnerable and building trust in the process. Officials say the success of the Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme will ultimately be measured by how many households transition from receiving aid to running sustainable livelihoods.
