The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of the dreaded Black Axe Confraternity during an intelligence-led operation in Uyo, thwarting what was believed to be a cult initiation exercise.
The arrest took place on Saturday, February 1, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., following credible intelligence that a group of suspected cultists were converging at a secondary school along Oron Road (name withheld), to conduct initiation activities.
Police operatives on intelligence swiftly moved to the scene, but on sighting the patrol team, the suspects reportedly took to their heels, abandoning a red mini-bus with registration number NYA-164XA.
It was learned, a hot chase by the Police ensued, leading to the arrest of two suspects identified as: Anitie Isaac (Male) and Unyime Effiong (Male).
A search of the abandoned vehicle and surrounding area led to the recovery of several items allegedly linked to cult operations, including:: one axe, one brown calabash, one bottle of Lord’s alcoholic drink, different types of incense, coloured handkerchiefs, one Neo Black Axe and (Neo Lord’s Movement of Africa) sticker.
The suspects, along with the recovered exhibits, have been taken into police custody and are currently undergoing thorough investigation.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Azare reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for cultism and all forms of criminality in the state.
He assured residents that the police would continue sustained operations to dismantle cult networks and ensure the safety of lives and property, and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and credible information to help combat crime across the state.
