In a remarkable display of statesmanship, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has relinquished his position as Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, citing the need to prioritize peace over personal ambition.

Speaking at the 1st APC Stakeholders meeting of 2026 in Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio drew parallels from the longstanding discord between Ikot Offiong and Itu communities, which has claimed thousands of lives over the years. The Senate President, a self-proclaimed student of history, recounted how the conflict, which began during the era of former Senate President Late Joseph Wayas and ex-Cross River State Governor Late Dr Clement Isong, has left deep scars.

Akpabio’s decision to step aside for Pastor Umo Eno, his grandson, was met with a somber response from the audience, who were left reflecting on the importance of prioritizing peace. “As a student of history, I understand the implications of allowing a repeat of history,” Akpabio said, urging stakeholders to strive for peaceful coexistence in the state.

The Senate President’s address has been hailed as a testament to his commitment to peace and unity in Akwa Ibom State. The move is seen as a bold step towards healing old wounds and fostering a new era of cooperation among APC stakeholders.
