The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has warned businesses operating in Nigeria without proper registration to comply within six weeks or face legal consequences. The Commission emphasized that carrying on business without registration under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 is a criminal offence, punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment and daily fines.
According to the CAC, operating as a company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership, or under any business name or acronym not duly registered with the Commission is illegal. The Commission cited sections of the Act that require registered companies to display their official name and registration number at every place of business and on all company publications.
The CAC urged members of the public to visit its website for guidance on the registration process and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering prompt and efficient services while ensuring regulatory compliance. Businesses have been given a six-week ultimatum to ensure full compliance, failing which the Commission will take necessary steps, including prosecution, to enforce compliance.
