David Mark Resigns from PDP, Joins National Opposition Coalition

Otukpo, Benue State | June 27, 2025 Former Senate President, Senator (Dr) David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark (GCON, FNIM, FNIPR), has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of an era in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Otukpo Ward 1, Benue State, Senator Mark stated that his decision to leave the party was made after extensive consultations with his family, close allies, and political associates.

“I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Senator Mark, who served as the President of the 6th and 7th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, expressed disappointment over the current state of the PDP, citing deepening divisions, leadership crises, and irreconcilable differences that, according to him, have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self.

The veteran lawmaker recalled his steadfast loyalty to the PDP since its inception, noting that even in the aftermath of the 2015 general elections when many stakeholders defected, he had remained one of the few committed voices working to rebuild and reposition the party.

“Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” he wrote. “I have worked steadfastly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party — efforts which, without sounding immodest, helped restore the PDP to national relevance.”

Senator Mark announced his alignment with the emerging National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, describing it as a strategic and patriotic step aimed at rescuing the country and preserving its democratic institutions.

The development is likely to send ripples across the nation’s political space, especially within the PDP, where Senator Mark has long been regarded as a pillar of stability and elder statesman.

His exit underscores growing discontent among party veterans and further signals possible realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
