FG Releases ₦2.3bn to Clear Lecturers’ Arrears, Reaffirms Commitment to Revitalising Tertiary Education

Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to settle outstanding salary and promotion arrears owed to university lecturers.Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this on Wednesday while briefing journalists on ongoing engagements between the government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and other unions in the tertiary education sector.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s universities through targeted fiscal interventions, comprehensive policy reforms, and sustained dialogue with stakeholders.According to him, the release of the funds demonstrates the government’s determination to address long-standing issues in the sector and ensure stability in academic activities across the nation’s higher institutions.

He added that discussions with ASUU and other unions are progressing, with the aim of achieving lasting industrial harmony and improved conditions in the tertiary education system. It is recalled, the funds released by the federal government was necessitated by the 2025 warning strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in continuation of the 2022 industrial union struggle to resolve wide-range of long standing issues bothering on poor funding of universities, lecturers’ welfare, and governance in the tertiary education sector.
