The ongoing development of Oron Maritime corridor (Infrastructure Project) in Akwa Ibom State is steadily positioning the historic coastal town of Oron as a major hub for maritime commerce, tourism, and inter-state transportation.

Driven by the administration of Governor Umo Eno, the project is one of the flagship initiatives under the ARISE Agenda aimed at redefining transportation and stimulating economic growth across the state.

When completed, the project is expected to transform the ancient coastal area into a vibrant center of marine business activities and tourism expeditions.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mrs Grace Akpan in a remark on social media said, the project is already opening up significant employment opportunities for local residents, with over 500 direct service providers projected to benefit through various operations linked to the maritime facility.

The initiative is also expected to stimulate wealth creation, enhance revenue generation, and strengthen inter-state maritime trade and passenger transportation.

The Oron Maritime project features extensive shoreline protection works designed to safeguard the coastal environment, while supporting modern maritime operations.

Key components include; a modern terminal, cargo and ferry jetties, warehouses, and a solar-powered cold room for the preservation of water resources (fish, crabs, crayfish etc) and other perishable goods.

Other facilities under construction include; a boat repair workshop, fuel depot, and motor park with access roads, all aimed at supporting the smooth movement of goods and passengers.

Recreational and tourism-friendly features such as: a floating bar, sand beach, sit-out huts, and an event stand are also part of the development plan, further positioning Oron as a destination for leisure and waterfront activities.

In addition to the infrastructure, Governor Eno has invested in the construction of two state-owned ferry boats currently underway in Port Harcourt, Rivers, and Apapa, Lagos State.

Upon completion, the ferries will operate routes connecting Akwa Ibom with neighboring states including Cross River and Rivers, departing from the Oron/Nwaniba jetties.

To ensure sustainability of the initiative, the state government has also commenced capacity-building programmes for youths who will be trained to operate and manage the ferry services and other maritime-related operations.

Observers say the integrated maritime project could significantly boost the blue economy potential of Akwa Ibom State, expand tourism prospects, and create a new corridor for regional trade and transportation along Nigeria’s coastal belt.

With construction work nearing completion, expectations are rising that the Oron Maritime Infrastructure Project will soon stand as a landmark investment that reshapes transportation, commerce, and tourism in the state.

This is a bold move by Governor Umo Eno to rejuvenate the lost glory Oron Maritime life that had nearly gone into extinction.
