The National Assembly will resume plenary on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to continue pursuing the mandate of the electorate. The Senate’s agenda includes further consideration of the Tax Reform Bills, 2024, which aims to reform the country’s tax regime and increase revenue for governments at all levels to implement projects and deliver dividends of democracy.
Upon resumption, the Senate will work with the Executive to resolve lingering socio-political issues across the federation, including the situation in Rivers State, with the goal of reconciling all stakeholders in the public interest. The Senate will also address the recent surge in insecurity in various parts of the country, particularly in Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau, by engaging with key actors in the security sector to develop effective national security management mechanisms.
During the recess, the Presidency announced several appointments, including the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and the management of the South-South Development Commission. The Senate will screen these nominees for approval. The Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Deputy President of the Senate Senator Barau I. Jubrin, will expedite the review process to strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure.
Additionally, the Senate will initiate the review of the Electoral Act, 2022, to ensure more credible and transparent elections. The Senate will also consider bills of strategic national interest pending in different sectors of the economy and encourage public hearings to engage with the electorate on law-making.
