A petrol tanker is reported to have rammed into the convoy of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, resulting in the death of a dispatch rider, DSP Ibrahim Hussaini on Sunday.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, after members of his convoy picked him up at Ibadan Airport.
Akpabio disclosed the incident on Tuesday during plenary at the National Assembly, where he announced the loss to fellow lawmakers and observed a moment of sympathy for the deceased and his family.
According to the Senate President, the crash occurred while his convoy was in motion, leading to the instant death of Mr Hussaini, who was attached to the security detail.
Senator Akpabio described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking, noting that the late dispatch rider was carrying out his official duties at the time.
“I want to use this opportunity to condole with the family of Ibrahim Hussaini, who lost his life in a very unfortunate accident while serving,” Senator Akpabio is quoted to have told the Senators in the Chamber.
“May his soul rest in peace, and may God grant his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss” said Akpabio.
Lawmakers across party lines also expressed condolences, acknowledging the risks faced daily by security personnel and support staff who accompany public officials in the line of duty.
No further details were provided on the circumstances surrounding the crash or whether any other members of the convoy sustained injuries.
The incident has, however, renewed concerns about road safety and the dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on major highways.
Meanwhile, Senate President has announced automatic employment for the two sons of the deceased dispatched rider saying, the offer stands as a direct gesture of support from him to the family of the officer, in honoring his legacy and sacrifice.
Mr Hussaini is survived by family members, who colleagues described as devastated by the sudden loss.
