Tinubu, Trump Parley Over Terrorism, Pledge Stronger Ties, Renewed Commitment to Peace, Security
President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration remains steadfast in safeguarding national unity, peace, and security following a “constructive and candid” telephone conversation with the U.S. President, Donald Trump earlier on (Friday)today.
In a nationwide address after the discussion, President Tinubu said both leaders agreed to prioritize “peace over conflict, hope over fear, and unity over division,” as they reviewed recent diplomatic tensions and reaffirmed mutual respect between Nigeria and the United States.
“We agreed that our shared priority is peace over conflict, hope over fear, and unity over division,” President Tinubu said.
“Both sides will take the necessary time to address the concerns that have been raised, which we acknowledge are genuine.”
He emphasized that his government would continue to uphold the protection of every Nigerian citizen, irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or background describing this as a “fundamental principle of state policy.”
“We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every citizen, anywhere within our federation, feels secure and enjoys the full protection of the state,” he added.
President Tinubu disclosed that, Nigeria and the United States would strengthen existing security cooperation to prevent any recurrence of incidents that threaten individuals or communities.
“Under my leadership, the Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the United States, will leverage existing security cooperation and mutual interests to prevent any recurrence of incidents that threaten individuals on the basis of faith, origin, or other fundamental rights guaranteed by our Constitution,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that, “tangible actions and results” would soon follow, reflecting a new era of decisive leadership and accountability.
Tinubu also acknowledged citizens’ frustrations with past government performances, describing them as legitimate expressions of concern that would guide his administration’s reforms.
“Rather than dismissing these concerns, we have taken them as lessons in accountability and responsibility,” he noted.
Reaffirming the longstanding diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the U.S., Tinubu said both nations were committed to building on their shared values and interests for the benefit of their peoples.
“President Trump and I have reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening the enduring diplomatic relations between our two nations,” he said.
The President urged Nigerians to remain confident and law-abiding as security agencies intensify efforts to safeguard all parts of the federation.
“No Nigerian should ever feel ashamed of their citizenship. We remain resolute in upholding the rights and dignity of every citizen, which lie at the heart of our union,” Tinubu declared.
He concluded his address with a call for unity and faith in the country’s founding ideals: “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress”, and signed off his conversation with the US Donald Trump as a listening President.
“We call on all citizens to continue placing their faith in the motto that defines our republic: ‘Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress.’ God bless you all. And God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the President said.
