At least 27 people have been killed in two separate mass shootings that rocked South Africa within hours of each other, sparking fresh concerns over rising gun violence in the country.
The first incident occurred near Johannesburg, where 17 people lost their lives and 15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries after gunmen opened fire at a local bar.
According to police reports, no fewer than eight armed men stormed the drinking spot late at night and shot sporadically at customers and staff who were inside the premises.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived suddenly and started shooting without warning, causing panic as people scampered for safety.
Many of the victims died on the spot, while those who sustained injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Security operatives who arrived at the scene cordoned off the area and commenced investigation, but no arrest had been made as at the time of filing this report.
In a second attack, 10 persons were killed and 11 others injured outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town.
Police said the shooting happened when unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of people who had gathered outside the venue in the early hours of the morning.
The victims were said to have been socializing when the assailants struck, leaving several dead and many others wounded.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment in different hospitals, with some said to be in critical condition.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into both incidents have commenced, but the motives behind the attacks remain unknown.
The South African Police Service said detectives are working to determine whether the two shootings are connected or are isolated cases of gang-related violence.
South Africa has been grappling with high rates of violent crime, including murder, armed robbery and gang-related shootings, particularly in townships and urban settlements.
