The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has announced that the issues leading to the Nigeria Meteorological Agency workers’ strike have been resolved. After a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, Keyamo stated that the government and NiMET unions had reached an agreement on various concerns, including salary disparities and minimum wage increases.
Keyamo said the government had identified with the unions’ struggles, particularly around salary inequalities between NiMET and other aviation agencies. He acknowledged that NiMET workers’ salaries were not aligned with those of comparable agencies, leading to frustration.
The minister confirmed that the issue of salary relativity had been addressed and that he would write to President Bola Tinubu for formal approval. He assured that the salary adjustments would be implemented immediately after receiving the president’s approval.
The government also agreed to implement the minimum wage for NiMET workers immediately, with funds already available in the current budget. Keyamo emphasized transparency, stating that union members would be involved in monitoring the implementation of salary and minimum wage adjustments.
He assured that any potential shortfalls would be addressed through a supplementary budget by the end of the current budget cycle. With these agreements in place, NiMET workers can expect changes reflected in their next salary payments.
