UYO – Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu, has commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for his unwavering support to Nigeria police personnel and sustained commitment to maintaining law and order in the state, describing his interventions as exemplary.
The IGP gave the commendation on Thursday, April 30, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Governor at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Uyo.
“Sincerely Sir, I came to thank you for all you have done for my officers to make their stay and job delivery easier and more effective in the state.
“I am most grateful for your unwavering support and collaboration in sustaining the peace and safety Akwa Ibom is widely known for,” Disu said.
He urged the Governor to continue to see the police as partners in progress, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
According to him, “It has come to the point in our country where everybody must own the police. The security of our communities and states belongs to all of us.”
The police boss emphasized the importance of community policing, noting that citizens must actively participate in safeguarding their environment by reporting misconduct and supporting law enforcement efforts.
Disu also informed the Governor of the successful passing out of over 1,000 police constables trained in modern firearms handling, describing Akwa Ibom as a pacesetter in innovative police training.
“Akwa Ibom State is a trailblazer in the new training initiative that has produced over 1,000 constables certified to be competent and professional in firearms handling,” he said, attributing the success of the programme to the state government’s substantial financial and logistical support.
The IGP further applauded the state’s environmental standards, noting its impressive cleanliness and infrastructure.
“I must confess that from the Victor Attah International Airport through the city to this place, Akwa Ibom is indeed very neat, with good roads and a beautiful ambience,” he added.
Governor Eno congratulated Disu on his appointment as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, expressing confidence in his capacity to strengthen national security.
He recalled the IGP’s outstanding performance during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and commended his professionalism and dedication to duty.
The Governor noted that the IGP’s presence at the passing-out parade of the constables would serve as a morale booster for the officers, urging them to remain committed to excellence in service.
Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the police and other security agencies to sustain Akwa Ibom’s status as a peaceful and secure state.
He also lauded the IGP’s efforts in advancing the vision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the establishment of functional state policing structures in synergy with the Nigeria Police Force.
The Governor appreciated the appointment of Anthony Placid, an indigene of the state, as Force Public Relations Officer, and commended the State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, for his proactive leadership.
Earlier, Azare highlighted several interventions by the state government, including the construction of internal road networks within the command headquarters, provision of patrol vehicles and gunboats, financial assistance for rebuilding homes of affected officers, and improved welfare packages.
The session was attended by members of the State Executive Council (SEC) and other government functionaries amongst others, as the IGP proceeded to the Police Mobile Base on Idoro Road for the graduation ceremony of 1, 000 Constables after their intensive weaponry training course.
