UYO – After weeks of intense scrutiny, consultations, and a closely watched contest among top-ranking academics, the Governing Council of the University of Uyo has approved the appointment of Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
The decision, which followed what insiders described as one of the most competitive vice-chancellorship races in the university’s recent history, was formally announced in a press release issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Blossom E. Okorie on Thursday April 30, 2026.
The appointment takes effect from June 16, 2026.
Findings indicate that the selection process attracted several high-profile professors within and outside the institution, many of whom were considered strong contenders owing to their academic pedigree and administrative experience.
Shortlisted candidates were subjected to a rigorous screening exercise, which included detailed evaluation of credentials, vision statements, and interactive sessions with the Governing Council.
Sources within the university disclosed that the contest was particularly intense at the final stage, where leading candidates presented strategic blueprints for repositioning the institution amid evolving challenges in Nigeria’s university system.
Issues such as funding, research innovation, staff welfare, and infrastructural expansion reportedly dominated the engagements.
Professor Ekong, a seasoned economist and former Chairman of the Committee of Deans, is said to have distinguished himself throughout the process with what the Council described as “clarity of vision, administrative depth, and a pragmatic roadmap” for the university’s advancement.
His prior leadership roles within the institution were also cited as critical factors that gave him an edge over other contestants.
The Council emphasized that the exercise adhered strictly to established legal frameworks and best practices, ensuring transparency, merit, and institutional integrity.
It noted that the emergence of Professor Ekong reflects the collective desire to sustain stability and accelerate development in the university.
A respected scholar with extensive experience in teaching, research, and administration, Ekong is expected to steer the University of Uyo through a new phase of academic excellence and strategic growth.
Stakeholders across the university community have since welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that the new Vice-Chancellor will consolidate on past achievements, while introducing reforms to enhance the institution’s competitiveness both nationally and globally.
With his tenure set to commence in mid-June, attention now shifts to how Professor Ekong will navigate the expectations that trailed his emergence from a field widely regarded as rich in capacity and ambition.
