Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced plans for an upward review of the welfare package and monthly remuneration of traditional rulers in the state.
Governor Eno made this known in Uyo while presenting certificates of recognition to newly recognised traditional rulers at the State Supreme Traditional Rulers Council Hall.
He said modalities had been put in place for the review, while urging the newly recognised clan heads and other traditional rulers to use their positions to promote peace, unity and stability at the grassroots.
The Governor also encouraged the traditional institution to work closely with state and local governments in addressing security and development needs within their respective domains.
The newly recognised traditional rulers include Etebom Bassey Okon of Ndiya Clan in Ikono; Etebom Ini Moses Akabom of Ito Clan in Ika; Etebom Mbang F. Mbang of Southern Afaha Clan in Ukanafun; Obong Joseph Okon Esu of Odu Clan in Okobo; Senator Nelson Asukwo Effiong of Oron; Obong Eshiet Charles Eno of Eket Offiong Clan in Eket; and Obong Okon Etim Asanang of Idua Clan in Oron Local Government Areas.
Governor Eno said the decision to review the welfare of traditional rulers was informed by the critical role they play in governance and community development. He noted that traditional rulers are the closest to the people and remain custodians of culture and tradition.
According to him, no government can achieve lasting peace without the support of the traditional institution. The upward review would enable the royal fathers to discharge their responsibilities more effectively.
The Governor congratulated the newly recognised clan heads on their elevation, their recognition followed due process and was in line with the customs and traditions of their respective communities.
He charged them to see their new status as a call to higher service.He also urged them to be fathers to all, irrespective of political or religious affiliations.
Governor Eno cautioned them against using their stools for partisan politics. He advised traditional rulers must remain neutral and be seen as symbols of unity, promote peaceful coexistence among their subjects.
Governor Eno reaffirmed his respect for the traditional institution. He said his administration holds the institution in high esteem. He noted that Akwa Ibom is known for its peace largely because of the role of traditional rulers.
Responding, some of the newly recognised traditional rulers thanked the Governor for the honour. They pledged to support the administration and promote peace in their domains.
They also commended the Governor for his plan to improve their welfare.They described the move as a demonstration of his respect for tradition.
The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers also lauded the Governor. He said the welfare review would boost morale and enhance performance.
The event was attended by top government officials and members of the State Traditional Rulers Council. Also present were family members, friends and subjects of the newly recognised traditional rulers.
The presentation of certificates of recognition marks the formal induction of the new clan heads into the state’s traditional council system.
