The Akwa Ibom State Government has extended humanitarian support to refugees and Bakassi returnees in Oboyo Ikot Ita, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, as part of activities marking the state’s 39th anniversary.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, who led the delegation, said the visit was aimed at engaging the residents directly, identifying their needs and exploring ways to improve their living conditions.
Princess Ibanga also commended the Chief Executive Officer of the Bakassi IDPs and Refugees Foundation, Prince Aston, for his contribution to humanitarian services and support for displaced persons and refugees.
She encouraged the residents to take advantage of education, skills acquisition and other legitimate opportunities to improve their livelihoods and become self-reliant.
The visit ended with the presentation of cash assistance to the residents, who expressed appreciation for the gesture. The delegation included officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, government representatives and other stakeholders.
She noted that the Governor Umo Eno-led administration is committed to leaving no one behind in its ARISE Agenda. She explained that humanitarian support remains a key pillar of the administration’s inclusive governance approach.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the gesture. They said the support would go a long way in easing their immediate challenges.
Some of them appealed for more assistance in the areas of housing, healthcare and education. They noted that many of their children lack access to quality education due to financial constraints. They also called for improved access to clean water and healthcare facilities in the settlement.
Prince Aston, in his remarks, thanked the state government for its humanitarian gesture. He said the foundation would continue to partner with government to support vulnerable populations.
He called on other well-meaning individuals and organisations to support displaced persons. He said the plight of Bakassi returnees requires sustained attention and collaboration.
Officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs said the visit provided first-hand assessment of conditions in the camp. They promised that the ministry would use the findings to design targeted interventions.
