Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Sacks Lecturer For Sexually Harassing Married Student

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University has dismissed senior lecturer Dr. Usman Aliyu over allegations of sexual harassment involving a married postgraduate student, Mrs. Kamila Aliyu. The university’s Governing Council approved the dismissal after the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee found Dr. Aliyu guilty of misconduct.

Mrs. Aliyu had formally accused Dr. Aliyu of sexual harassment in 2024, alleging that he threatened her academic progress unless she yielded to his advances. Despite a defamation lawsuit filed by Dr. Aliyu against Mrs. Aliyu, the department, and the university, ATBU proceeded with its internal investigations and based its decision on the Senior Staff Conditions of Service.

The university has directed Dr. Aliyu to return all institutional property in his possession, including handing over his identification card to the Chief Security Officer. This dismissal marks a significant disciplinary action, highlighting the university’s commitment to upholding ethical standards within its academic community.
