The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a scathing rebuke to the newly declared factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki over his call for foreign intervention in Nigeria’s affairs.
Turaki, had earlier told journalists that international powers should intervene to halt what he described as “Christian genocide” and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
In a sharply worded statement on Tuesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the remarks as “reckless and unpatriotic,” describing Turaki’s position as a dangerous affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Morka said Turaki, who was declared chairman barely 72 hours ago by a faction of the crisis-ridden PDP, appeared “desperate, confused, incoherent and grossly lacking in the capacity to manage his party’s crisis.”
According to the ruling party, rather than initiate reconciliation efforts within his “deeply fractured” party, Turaki opted for a drastic and irresponsible appeal that poses grave national security concerns.
“Instead of embarking on an urgent peace-building mission to unite his warring factions, Turaki’s first major action as factional chairman was a call for foreign invasion of Nigeria, stating, “That is as shameless as it is dangerous.”
APC further argued that even during the PDP’s 16 years rule marked, according to the party, by “ruthless subversion” of opposition politics, there was no instance where foreign intervention was suggested as a remedy for internal party disputes.
Turaki’s comments, APC said, amount to an admission of the PDP’s incapacity to manage its internal contradictions and should be seen as “a final certification of the party’s demise.”
The ruling party expressed confidence that, the international community would disregard what it called the PDP’s “disgraceful and unpatriotic” appeal, insisting it was merely an attempt to distract from the opposition party’s internal failures and “embarrassing disintegration.”
“The heightened desperation of the PDP and its leaders is now clear for all to see. Turaki’s call demonstrates how far they are willing to go, even seeking destructive foreign intervention on Nigerian soil to pursue their sinister political agenda,” Morka stated.
The APC urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting the party and the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reiterating its commitment to driving national progress and prosperity.
