Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Argentina defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth a reported €40 million, including add-ons. The move makes the 28-year-old the latest big addition to Diego Simeone’s squad ahead of the new La Liga season.
Romero joins Atletico after spending five seasons in North London. The centre back made 156 appearances for Tottenham and became a key figure in their defense. His time at the club ended on a high after he helped Spurs win the 2025 Europa League trophy, their first major silverware in 17 years.
The World Cup winner confirmed his exit from Tottenham earlier this week. In an emotional farewell, Romero described his spell in England as a journey that brought him enormous pride despite some challenges.
Romero’s arrival at Atletico Madrid is a major statement of intent. The Rojiblancos are looking to strengthen their defense as they push for the La Liga title and a deep run in the Champions League.
The €40m fee makes Romero one of Atletico’s most expensive defensive signings in recent years. The deal was concluded quickly after Tottenham gave the green light, with personal terms agreed without any major issues. The Argentine is expected to link up with his new teammates immediately for pre season.
Romero becomes Atletico’s latest marquee signing as the Madrid club looks to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid this season.
