The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully uncovered and neutralised explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, averting what authorities described as a potential disaster.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, noting that the operation was carried out following credible intelligence from correctional officials who reported suspicious items within the facility.

According to her, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, promptly directed the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit from BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.

She explained that a coordinated search operation led to the recovery of two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a 45cm length of burning fuse. Additional items recovered included a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm conduit iron pipe.

“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure,” she said.

The command has since heightened security around the custodial centre, with increased surveillance, stricter access control, and sustained patrols to forestall any further threats.

DSP John added that investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the explosives and to apprehend those responsible.

She reassured residents that the situation is under control and confirmed that no casualties were recorded. She also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

The police spokesperson warned that the command would not tolerate attempts to compromise public safety or target critical institutions, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
