Delta Governor Oborevwori’s Alleged Defection: PDP Denies, APC Celebrates

Unconfirmed reports circulated today that Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the political scene in Asaba ablaze. The story broke mid‑afternoon via a statement attributed to the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, and quickly appeared on several online news platforms.

However, the Delta State Government’s official Information Commissioner, Charles Aniagwu, immediately pushed back on these claims. Speaking to reporters at Government House, Aniagwu insisted that Oborevwori remains “a proud and active member of the PDP,” describing the rumors as “totally false and politically motivated.” He emphasized that the governor “continues to work with his party to advance development and unity across Delta State.”

Despite the denial, APC leaders in the state celebrated what they hailed as “a major breakthrough.” In a statement this evening, the Delta APC Publicity Secretary congratulated Governor Oborevwori for “joining the progressive fold” and urged PDP faithful who felt marginalized to follow suit.

Governor Oborevwori was elected on the PDP ticket in March 2023, securing wide support in his home region. His administration has focused on rural road rehabilitation, healthcare improvements, and youth empowerment programs. Until today, there had been no credible indication of any serious rift between the governor and his party hierarchy.

Political analysts note, however, that defections are common in the run‑up to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as politicians seek to position themselves for emerging alliances. They caution that early‑season rumors should be treated cautiously until officially confirmed.

Observers expect Governor Oborevwori to address the defection rumors directly—either in person at an upcoming press briefing or via an official written statement on the Government House website and verified social‑media channels.

Both the PDP State Secretariat and the Delta APC leadership are expected to issue formal responses. A definitive statement from the PDP National Working Committee would help settle speculation.

If confirmed, Oborevwori’s defection would represent a seismic shift in Delta’s political landscape, potentially triggering a cascade of realignments among local lawmakers and stakeholders.

For now, Delta watchers will be watching closely for the governor’s own words. Until then, today’s reports remain unverified—an eleventh‑hour twist in Delta State’s evolving political drama.
