NSIT ATAI – Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has charged corps members deployed to the state to regard their posting as a rare opportunity to serve the nation with honesty, dedication and selflessness.
The governor gave the charge during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch A Stream II Orientation Course held at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Nsit-Antai Local Government Area on Tuesday.
Represented by the Director of Administration and Supply in the Ministry of Youth Development, Mr. Anthony Isonguyo, who stood in for the Permanent Secretary, Eno commended the corps members for successfully completing the orientation exercise without casualties despite its rigours.
He described the orientation programme as a vital component of the NYSC scheme and urged the corps members to contribute meaningfully to nation-building through civic enlightenment and community service.
“I am particularly delighted that you braved up to the challenges and rigours of the exercise without any casualties.
“As you may know, the orientation course which you have successfully undergone is an essential aspect of the National Service Corps scheme,” he stated.
The governor further charged the corps members to use their educational background and acquired skills in promoting peace, unity and development in their host communities.
“You are therefore expected to play crucial roles in sensitizing our people on their civic responsibilities toward building an egalitarian, peaceful and prosperous society.
“Your educational background, acquired skills, and deployment to different parts of the state eminently qualify you to vigorously pursue these ideals.
“I therefore urge you to accept your posting as a rare opportunity to serve your fatherland with honesty, dedication and selflessness,” he added.
Eno, who expressed satisfaction with the conduct and cooperation displayed by the corps members during the orientation exercise, urged them to sustain the virtues of humility, discipline and loyalty throughout their service year and beyond.
“I received heartwarming reports regarding your commendable conduct and cooperation with camp officials throughout the orientation course.
“I encourage you to sustain these virtues of humility, discipline and loyalty throughout your service year and beyond,” he said.
Highlighting the peaceful and hospitable nature of Akwa Ibom people, the governor encouraged the corps members to integrate freely with their host communities, while respecting their customs, values and aspirations.
He noted that previous corps members had left remarkable legacies in different sectors across the state and urged the new batch to surpass such achievements.
The governor also cautioned the corps members against embarking on night journeys, advising them to stop over at corps lodges, police stations or military barracks whenever it is after 6 p.m. during any trip.
