Haitian music icon Fabrice Rouzier has sued Nigerian Afro-fusion star Burna Boy and French-Haitian singer Joe Dwet File for copyright infringement in a New York court. Rouzier claims that their song “4 Kampe II” unlawfully incorporated elements from his 2002 hit “Je Vais”, including music composition, sound recording, and visual materials, without permission. The dispute began in fall 2024 when Gilles released “4 Kampe”, which Rouzier asserts was based on his song. After Rouzier sent a cease-and-desist letter, Gilles allegedly admitted to using Rouzier’s material but still collaborated with Burna Boy on “4 Kampe II”. Rouzier argues that Burna Boy was aware of the infringement but proceeded with the collaboration, causing harm to his brand and profits.
Rouzier is seeking compensatory and exemplary damages, reimbursement of legal fees, and a court order prohibiting further use of his image, persona, and creative works in connection with the songs. He also wants the court to mandate the destruction of all copies of the offending materials. This lawsuit comes shortly after fellow Nigerian artist Davido faced a similar copyright infringement suit in the US.
