The quiet community of Ikot Esenam Obom in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State came to a solemn standstill as family members, friends, and well-wishers gathered to bid a dignified farewell to late Obong Xavier Charles Essien (KSM).

The deceased, according to the family, was a revered teacher, devout Catholic, and respected community patriarch.

The week-long funeral rites, marked by deep reflection and honour, commenced on Monday, April 13, 2026, with the opening of mourning house, and climax on Friday April 17, 2026 with a Requiem Mass held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Ikot Esenam Parish in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where a large congregation paid their last respects.

Obong Essien, who passed on November 8, 2025, at the age of 84, was widely celebrated for his unwavering commitment to education, faith, and community development.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his son, Mr. Nkereuwem Essien, expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support received during their period of mourning.

He acknowledged the presence and contributions of friends, associates, religious institutions, and government representatives, describing the outpouring of love as a reflection of the impactful life his father lived.

“We are deeply grateful for the immense support, prayers, and solidarity shown to our family. It gives us comfort to know that our father touched countless lives positively.

“We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed in one way or another to ensure he was given a befitting farewell,” he stated.

Born on May 14, 1941, to the family of late Obong Charles Essien and Adiaha Ubak of Oruk Anam, the deceased distinguished himself early as a disciplined and determined individual.

He began his educational journey at St. Luke’s Primary School, Ikot Esenam, and later attended Secondary Commercial School, Ibekwe, Ikot Abasi, as part of its pioneer set.

Driven by a passion for teaching, he devoted several decades to nurturing young minds across schools in Akwa Ibom State, earning the nickname “Mr. Chikobi” for his firm discipline, excellence, and mentorship.

He furthered his studies at the University of Cross River State (now University of Uyo), where he obtained a National Certificate of Education in Mathematics/Economics, and rose through the ranks to retire as a Principal Master I.

A committed Catholic, Obong Essien served St. Luke’s Catholic Church in various leadership roles, including Parish Council Treasurer, Secretary, and Chairman. His dedication to the church earned him knighthood in the Order of St. Mulumba in 2008, where he attained the Third Degree.

In the community, he held several key positions, including Village Council Secretary, Chairman, Deputy Village Head, and family head. He was widely admired for his integrity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to peace and development.

Tributes poured in from across professional, religious, and social circles, describing him as a “pillar of wisdom,” “a disciplinarian with a human face,” and “a man devoted to God and service to humanity.”

Despite battling age-related illness since 2016, he remained steadfast in faith and resilient in spirit until his passing.

As the curtain fell on his funeral rites, many reflected on a life of purpose, discipline, and service, one that left an enduring imprint on his family, church, and community.

Obong Xavier Charles Essien is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and a legacy of values that will continue to inspire generations.
