LIONEL MESSI MAKES HISTORY, WINS MLS GOLDEN BOOT BACK-TO-BACK FOR FIRST TIME EVER

Argentine football legend and Inter Miami superstar, Lionel Messi, has once again written his name in gold in the history books of American football after winning the 2026 Major League Soccer, MLS, Golden Boot award, becoming the first player ever in the 30-year history of the league to win the prestigious top scorer prize in back-to-back seasons.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was officially confirmed as the winner of the 2026 Golden Boot on Saturday, the final day of the regular season, after finishing the campaign with 26 goals in 31 appearances for Inter Miami, four goals clear of his closest challenger, Petar Musa of FC Dallas, who ended the season with 22 goals.

With this latest achievement, the 39-year-old genius has achieved what no other player has ever done in MLS history, despite the league having produced some of the most prolific goalscorers over the last three decades, including Bradley Wright-Phillips, Josef Martinez, Carlos Vela and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, none of whom ever won the award consecutively.

According to the MLS official statement released on Saturday night, Messi becomes the sixth player in league history to win the Golden Boot on multiple occasions, but he stands alone as the only player to win it in two consecutive seasons, a feat that cements his dominance and legendary status in American soccer since his arrival in 2023.

Messi’s journey to the 2026 Golden Boot was one of consistency, brilliance and sheer magic, as he led the scoring charts for most of the season, scoring crucial goals, producing unforgettable moments and carrying Inter Miami to second place in the Eastern Conference despite facing injuries, fixture congestion and international commitments earlier in the year.

The Argentine maestro was held scoreless in Inter Miami’s final regular-season fixture against Charlotte FC on Saturday at the Miami Freedom Park, which ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw after Inter Miami had thrown away a three-goal lead, but his two assists from corner kicks were enough to secure home advantage for the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Despite not scoring in the final game, his tally of 26 goals was already unassailable, as his closest rival, Petar Musa, failed to find the back of the net in Dallas’ 3-1 home victory over Colorado Rapids, leaving Messi as the undisputed top scorer of the 2026 MLS regular season and the rightful owner of the Golden Boot.

Last season, in 2025, Messi had won his first MLS Golden Boot with a staggering 29 goals in just 28 games, a tally that was the fourth-highest in a single MLS season in history and included 28 non-penalty goals, which was the highest non-penalty total ever recorded in the league at that time.

This season, he followed it up with 26 goals in 31 games, including 25 non-penalty goals, which is now the second-highest non-penalty total for a single MLS season, just behind what he himself achieved last year, making him the second player in league history to score at least 25 goals in back-to-back seasons.

In total, Messi has now scored 55 goals in 59 regular-season games over the last two seasons for Inter Miami, an incredible return for a player who is now 39 years old and who many thought would have slowed down after retiring from international football earlier this year after 21 glorious years with the Argentina national team.

Messi’s influence on Inter Miami goes beyond just goalscoring, as he also contributed 17 assists during the 2026 regular season, helping the club finish the season with a league-high 80 goals, with Messi directly involved in nearly 54 percent of all goals scored by the Herons, accounting for almost a third of their total goals alone.

The club, which is the defending MLS Cup champion, finished second in the Eastern Conference behind runaway overall leaders Nashville SC, who broke the all-time MLS points record for a season with a whopping 77 points after beating Cincinnati 2-0 on the final day, setting up an intriguing playoff campaign for Messi and his teammates.

Inter Miami will now turn its attention to the MLS Cup Playoffs which begin on November 19th, where they will face Columbus Crew in a best-of-three first-round series as they look to defend their title and become the first team in several years to win back-to-back MLS Cups, with Messi leading the charge once again.

Reacting to the achievement, Inter Miami CF wrote on its official X handle, “Not a repeat. A reminder. Back-to-back Golden Boot winner. Congratulations, Leo!,” accompanied by dazzling emojis and highlights of his goals during the season, a post that has since gone viral with millions of likes, retweets and comments from fans across the world.

Football fans, pundits and analysts in Nigeria and across Africa have also joined in celebrating Messi’s latest milestone, with many describing him as the greatest player of all time who continues to defy age, logic and expectations, proving that class, talent and genius are permanent even at 39 years of age in a very physical and demanding league.

Many Nigerian fans who follow MLS closely have noted that Messi’s achievement is even more remarkable because he achieved it while playing fewer minutes than most of his rivals, often being rested for midweek games and international windows, yet still managing to outscore every striker, winger and forward in the entire American top-flight league.

On the individual front, Messi is also the overwhelming favourite to win the MLS Most Valuable Player, MVP, award for a third consecutive season, which would be another unprecedented feat in MLS history, as no player has ever won the MVP award three times in a row, and the voting which includes media, players and club officials is expected to favour him.

The MVP award is decided through voting by media representatives, players and club technical staff, with goalscoring being one of several factors considered, alongside assists, overall influence, leadership and team success, all of which Messi has excelled in this season despite Inter Miami finishing second in the East rather than first overall.

Messi’s 2026 campaign also included significant commitments away from club football, including his emotional retirement from international football earlier this year after leading Argentina for over two decades, and his contract extension with Inter Miami through 2028 which he signed in October, committing his future to the club until he is 41.

At 39, Messi continues to remain one of the most defining, decisive and dominant attacking forces in MLS, with his latest Golden Boot adding another milestone to his already illustrious, incomparable and legendary career that has seen him win every major trophy in world football, from the World Cup to the Champions League to the Copa America.

Sports analysts in the United States have argued that Messi’s back-to-back Golden Boot wins have elevated the profile, standard and global appeal of MLS more than any other signing in the league’s history, as stadiums are sold out wherever he plays, TV ratings have skyrocketed and young American players now see MLS as a destination league rather than a retirement league.

For Inter Miami head coach and management, Messi’s achievement is a testament to the club’s project, vision and ambition, as they have built a formidable attacking team around him that includes Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and other world-class talents, allowing Messi to thrive, score freely and create chances for his teammates with his genius.

As at press time, Messi himself is yet to issue a lengthy personal statement on his Golden Boot win, but sources close to the player say he is focused, determined and hungry to lead Inter Miami to another MLS Cup title, adding that individual awards are always secondary to team success for the Argentine who has won everything there is to win in football.

With the playoffs now approaching, all eyes will be on Lionel Messi to see if he can complete a historic treble of back-to-back Golden Boot, back-to-back MVP and back-to-back MLS Cup, a feat that has never been achieved before and which would further cement his legacy as not just the greatest player to ever play in MLS, but as the greatest footballer of all time.
