The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has directed manufacturers of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET or plastic bottles below 200 millilitres to immediately begin a nationwide recall of the products.

The directive, announced on Tuesday, targets drinks that fall below the approved volume threshold and have been flagged for easy access and affordability. NAFDAC said the recall will be enforced across all states, with regulatory officers monitoring markets, motor parks, and informal retail points where the products are commonly sold.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the decision followed an enforcement undertaking signed by key industry associations and their member companies. According to her, the agreement commits producers to withdraw the prohibited packages from circulation and to halt further production and distribution.

Prof. Adeyeye explained that the measure is part of the agency’s broader public health strategy. She noted that small volume alcohol packs have continued to circulate despite previous warnings, making them readily available to minors and young adults.

She described the enforcement as a necessary public health intervention aimed at reducing access to high-alcohol-content drinks among children and young people. The DG urged parents, school authorities, and community leaders to support the campaign by reporting outlets that continue to stock the banned products.

NAFDAC has warned that failure to comply will attract sanctions, including product seizure, facility closure, and prosecution. The agency said it will work with trade associations, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, and state ministries of health to ensure full compliance, while encouraging manufacturers to transition to compliant packaging sizes above 200 millilitres.
