The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed former Super Eagles head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, as interim manager of the senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons.

The NFF confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, stating that Eguavoen will take charge of the team for the 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros scheduled for October.

According to the Federation, the decision was reached to ensure stability and continuity within the team as preparations intensify for the crucial qualifiers.

Eguavoen, a former international defender, previously handled the Super Eagles on multiple occasions and is widely respected for his experience at both club and international level.

The 60-year-old tactician is expected to work with the current Super Falcons technical crew while also bringing in fresh ideas ahead of the two-legged tie against Comoros.

The Super Falcons are aiming to secure a spot at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles after missing out on the last edition. The team remains one of Africa’s most successful women’s sides with multiple WAFCON titles.

NFF officials said Eguavoen’s wealth of experience and knowledge of Nigerian football made him the ideal choice to steer the team through the qualifiers on an interim basis.

The first leg against Comoros will be played in Moroni, while the return fixture is expected to hold in Nigeria later in October. The winner on aggregate will advance to the next round of the Olympic qualifiers.

The Federation urged Nigerians to rally behind the team and the interim coach, expressing confidence that the Super Falcons will make the country proud and secure qualification for the 2028 Olympics.
