The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has warned Nigerians to expect thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday.

The agency in its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja said the weather conditions will affect various regions of the country.

NiMet said on Monday, parts of the North, North-Central and southern regions will see rainfall, with thunderstorms expected in Taraba, Kebbi and Niger states. It added that showers are also possible in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in the South-South.

According to the agency, similar conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau among areas likely to experience thunderstorms and rain.

It noted that other parts of the North and southern regions will also experience cloudy conditions with prospects of intermittent rainfall.The agency said the expected rainfall could lead to flash floods in low-lying areas, urging residents in flood-prone locations to take precautionary measures.

NiMet advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall and stay away from tall trees during thunderstorms. It also urged Nigerians to unplug electrical appliances during storms to reduce the risk of lightning and power surges.

The agency further called on motorists to exercise caution and avoid waterlogged roads to prevent accidents. NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from its office for effective planning and safety of operations.

It also urged members of the public to keep abreast of its daily weather updates through its official platforms.

The agency reassured Nigerians of its commitment to providing timely and accurate weather information to support disaster management and socio-economic activities across the country.

Meanwhile, NiMet has urged State Emergency Management Agencies, SEMAs, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to remain on alert and activate response mechanisms where necessary to mitigate the impact of the predicted weather.

It also advised farmers to take advantage of the weather advisory to plan their agricultural activities and avoid losses during the period.

NiMet said it will continue to monitor weather patterns and issue updates as necessary, urging Nigerians to take its warnings seriously to stay safe.
