The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has confirmed the death of one of its officers following a brutal attack on its personnel while they were conducting a routine surveillance patrol in Niger State, an incident that has once again highlighted the grave security risks faced by border security operatives in remote parts of the country. The Service, in a statement released to newsmen, said the fallen officer paid the supreme price in the line of duty while working to secure Nigeria’s territorial borders against illegal migration and cross-border criminal activities.
The Service disclosed that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at about 11:30 a.m. along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis, a difficult and largely isolated border corridor in Niger State that is known for its challenging terrain and vulnerability to criminal infiltration. According to the statement, two officers who were attached to the Wawa Control Post, a strategic border outpost under the Niger State Command, were on a scheduled surveillance patrol when the unfortunate incident happened.
According to the NIS, the officers involved in the operation were part of the regular patrol team attached to the Wawa Control Post, a border outpost that is responsible for monitoring movement, checking illegal entry and preventing smuggling activities along that stretch of the border. The Service explained that the officers were carrying out their legitimate duties of border surveillance and routine patrol, which is part of their daily operational mandate to ensure that Nigeria’s borders are safe and secure from unwanted elements.
The Immigration Service explained that the officers were on a surveillance patrol along the bushy and isolated axis when they were suddenly ambushed by unidentified armed men who emerged from the surrounding area and opened fire on them without warning. The attack, according to the Service, was carried out by criminal elements who were said to have been armed with sophisticated weapons and who took advantage of the isolated nature of the area to launch their assault on the unsuspecting officers.
The attack, which was described as sudden, violent and unprovoked, led to the death of one of the officers on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries from gunshots fired by the assailants, while the second officer narrowly escaped with serious wounds. The Service said the name of the deceased officer has been temporarily withheld pending official communication and formal notification of his immediate family and next of kin in line with its standard operational procedure.
The second officer, identified as Inspector A.K. Musa, was said to have sustained serious injuries from gunshots during the attack but managed to summon courage and escape from the scene despite bleeding profusely, thereby avoiding being killed by the armed men. Inspector Musa was later rescued by reinforcement teams that were deployed to the area after the incident was reported, and he was immediately taken to a medical facility where he is currently receiving intensive medical attention.
The Nigeria Immigration Service said the remains of the deceased officer have been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, shortly after the incident, as the Service expressed deep condolences to his family, friends and colleagues over the painful and irreparable loss. The Service described the burial as having been conducted with full honour and respect for the gallant officer who died while serving his fatherland.
In a statement issued after the incident, the NIS described the attack as unfortunate, barbaric and highly condemnable, noting that its personnel daily put their lives on the line and operate under extremely difficult conditions to secure the nation’s vast and porous borders. The Service lamented that despite their sacrifices and commitment to national security, its officers have continued to be targets of criminal attacks by armed groups.
The Service said the officers were carrying out their lawful and constitutional duties of protecting the country’s territorial integrity and enforcing immigration laws when they came under attack by criminal elements who have no regard for human life. It stressed that the officers were not engaged in any confrontation but were simply performing their routine surveillance assignment when they were attacked.
It expressed deep sadness over the death of the officer, whom it described as a dedicated, committed and highly professional personnel who served the Service with loyalty and died in the line of duty while protecting the nation. The Service said the officer will be remembered for his courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The NIS also prayed for the quick and complete recovery of Inspector Musa, who survived the attack but is still battling serious injuries sustained during the incident, and assured that the Service will provide all necessary medical support to ensure he recovers fully. The Service said it is closely monitoring his health condition and will continue to support him and his family throughout the recovery process.
The Service assured members of the public that it will not be deterred, intimidated or discouraged by the cowardly attack in carrying out its constitutional mandate of border security, migration management and national security enforcement. It maintained that the incident will not affect its resolve to continue to man the nation’s borders effectively and professionally.
It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, welfare and operational efficiency of its personnel who are deployed to various border posts, control posts and other operational locations across the length and breadth of the country, many of which are in remote and high-risk areas. The Service said it will continue to prioritise the protection of its men and officers.
The NIS further stated that it is working closely with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to track down the perpetrators of the dastardly attack and ensure that they are apprehended and brought to justice. It said a joint security operation has been initiated to comb the area.
According to the Service, security agencies have already commenced thorough investigations into the incident and have intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering in the area to prevent further attacks and to reassure border communities of their safety. The Service added that additional personnel have been deployed to strengthen security around the Wawa axis.
The Tunga Taya–Woro axis where the incident occurred is known to be a remote border area that has witnessed occasional security challenges over the years, including activities of armed bandits, smugglers and other criminal groups who operate in the vast ungoverned spaces. The difficult terrain and limited presence of security personnel have made the area vulnerable to such attacks.
The NIS noted that despite the difficult terrain, harsh weather conditions and glaring security risks associated with border patrol duties, its personnel have continued to discharge their duties with courage, professionalism and dedication to the nation. It said the officers remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders.
It called on residents of border communities and traditional leaders in the area to support security agencies with timely, credible and actionable information that could help in preventing attacks, tracking criminal elements and improving border security management. The Service emphasised that community partnership is crucial for effective border security.
The Service also urged its personnel across the country to remain vigilant, security conscious and to adhere strictly to operational guidelines, standard operating procedures and safety protocols while carrying out patrols and surveillance activities, especially in high-risk areas. It advised officers to always operate in teams and maintain constant communication with their commands.
It assured that concrete measures are being put in place to enhance the protection of officers on duty, including improved logistics, provision of modern communication equipment, armoured patrol vehicles and enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies for quick reinforcement during emergencies.
The death of the officer has thrown the entire NIS family into mourning, with colleagues and superiors describing the deceased as a gallant, hardworking and passionate officer who was deeply committed to his job and who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The Command has been in a sombre mood since the news of his death was announced.
The Service said it will ensure that the family of the deceased officer is adequately supported, comforted and that all entitlements, benefits and welfare packages due to him are promptly processed and paid without delay. It said the welfare of the families of fallen heroes remains a top priority for the leadership of the Service.
It also reiterated its resolve to continue to protect the nation’s borders, enforce immigration laws and contribute meaningfully to national security despite the numerous challenges, sacrifices and risks faced by its personnel in the field daily.
Meanwhile, the NIS has appealed to members of the public to continue to support, cooperate with and show understanding to Immigration officers as they carry out their duties in the overall interest of national security and national development.
The Service maintained that the attack will not weaken its resolve but will rather strengthen its commitment, determination and dedication to safeguarding the nation’s borders and ensuring effective migration management in line with its statutory mandate.
