The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Francis Duru, whose passing was announced in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The sad news was made public by his family through a statement posted on his verified Instagram handle, @francis.duru, where they disclosed that the actor passed away after a brief illness that lasted only a short period.
The family, in their emotional announcement, wrote, “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” appealing for privacy during this difficult moment.
Shortly after the family statement, the news was further confirmed by the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, who took to social media to express his shock and grief over the loss.
In his tribute, the AGN President simply stated, “Another great thespian gone…Rest in peace Francis Duru!!” noting that the industry has lost one of its most dependable and respected pillars who gave his all to the growth of Nollywood.
Francis Duru, aged 57, was widely regarded as one of the most disciplined, consistent and versatile actors to have ever graced the Nigerian screen, with a career that has inspired generations of younger performers.
Born Francis Ogide Duru on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents who hail from Imo State in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria, he had his early formative years and basic education in Cameroon before returning to Nigeria.
He later proceeded to the prestigious University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996, a solid academic background that laid the foundation for his sterling career in the performing arts.
Duru’s journey into acting began professionally in 1989 when he featured in the movie Missing Mark directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko, marking the beginning of what would become a remarkable 37-year sojourn in the industry.
However, it was his outstanding performance as Ahanna in the 1995 blockbuster action thriller, Rattlesnake, produced by the late iconic filmmaker Amaka Igwe, that shot him into national limelight and made him a household name across the country.
Following that career-defining role, Francis Duru became a constant face on Nigerian television and home videos, starring in several critically acclaimed movies such as Blood Money, Stigma, Home in Exile, Nnenda, Mboputa, The Good Husband and many other productions that showcased his range.
What set Duru apart was his unique ability to interpret complex characters with depth, sincerity and emotional intelligence, avoiding the exaggerated acting style that characterised many early Nollywood productions and earning him the admiration of colleagues and critics alike.
Beyond acting, the late thespian was a multi-talented creative who also worked as a producer, director, voice-over artist, master of ceremonies and development communications expert, using his platform to impact society positively.
His contributions to youth development and nation-building were recognised in 2007 when he was conferred with the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award for his positive influence on young people and his commitment to societal values.
In 2010, he was called upon to serve the industry in a leadership capacity when he was appointed interim President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, a role he handled during a turbulent period in the guild’s history and which further cemented his status as a leader.
Duru’s talent and hard work did not go unnoticed as he received several nominations and awards, including a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2010 and winning Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2020 for his role in Mboputa.
In June 2026, the actor had made headlines after a video surfaced online showing him looking frail and unwell, prompting speculations about his health, but he came out to debunk the rumours, describing them as malicious and false and urging the public to disregard them.
His eventual passing is coming barely two years after he suffered a devastating family tragedy with the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024, a loss that left him shattered and which he publicly mourned with touching tributes.
Francis Duru is survived by his beloved wife, Adokiye Duru, whom he married in 2003, his children, extended family members, friends and a legion of fans across Nigeria and the diaspora who admired his work and gentle personality.
His death represents yet another painful loss for Nollywood, which has in recent years lost many of its veteran actors, and tributes have continued to pour in from all corners of the entertainment industry, with many describing him as a legend whose legacy will continue to live on through his timeless works.
